Profile of TRAINER, FACILITATOR AND CAPACITY BUILDER, Nigeria (Dr. Uzodinma Adirieje)


My name is Dr. Uzodinma Adirieje. I am a trainer of trainers (ToT), trainer, facilitator, capacity building consultant and professional manager for health and development. In 1998-1999, I was the director and facilitator/resource person for 3 batches of training on ‘Overcoming Maternal and Child Nutritional Anemia’ for civil society organizations [CSOs] and community leaders and health workers in Badagry Lagos, 1998-1999. In 2005, I was in charge of planning and overseeing the provision and programme of the CSO activities at the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA). As the National Programme Coordinator, I provided leadership, oversight and support in the capacity building of 125 persons from the 36 States and FCT on Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) under the Global Fund Round 9 (GFR9); and training of 250 persons from all the states and FCT on the provision of Home-Based Care (HBC) for HIV/AIDS; under GFR9 during 2010-2011 under the Civil Society for HIV/AIDS in Nigeria [CiSHAN].

I was the lead facilitator for Monitoring and Evaluation Planning for State Sector-wide Plan for HIV/AIDS in Imo State in June 2012; and have provided effective leadership and oversight on the ongoing capacity building/training certificate courses of Health Systems and Projects Consultants Ltd since 2012, and programmatic and administrative leadership for the implementation of the HIV/AIDS control programs of the Catholic Action Committee on AIDS (PACA) in Abuja during 2008-2011. With the commitment to sustainable throughout the project, programme and organizational life cycles, I supported capacity development (CD) in partner-organizations of CiSHAN, Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria (HERFON) and Afrihealth Optonet Association (AOA); and provided opportunity development for member-CSOs of AOA in accessing the grants in 2014 by organizing proposal writing and project management capacity development workshops towards grants-application and implementation of activities/projects, 2014. I provided routine immunization (RI) CD through supportive supervision for partner health centres of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) in Imo State, 2012–2014.

Since 2006, I have been designing and developing materials, modules, manuals, methodologies/strategies for implementation for training interventions and capacity building in the areas of Proposal Writing and Development; Project and Programme Management; Fundraising and Resource Mobilization; Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization; Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E); Leadership Development, Career Advancement and Organizational Management; Health Systems Strengthening (HSS); Community Systems Strengthening (CSS), and Gender Mainstreaming in Programs and ‘M&E’. I designed and developed the capacity building on Monitoring and Evaluation Planning for State Sector-wide Plan for HIV/AIDS in Imo State in 2012; Fundraising and Resource Mobilization for Lagos State MOH staff, 2014; and Project and Program Planning/Design and Development for Ogun State MoH staff in 2014. I have regularly been involved coordinating and maintaining sustainable capacity of CSO partners in CiSHAN, HERFON and AOA.

I coordinated and supervised 6 zonal 3-days training on Resource Mobilization and Financial Management for CBOs from the 36 states and FCT in 2010; 6 zonal 3-days training on Organizational Development for CBOs from the 36 states and FCT in 2010 under the National HIV/AIDS Fund (HAF). I was a trainer and facilitating consultant for ‘AIDS, TB and Malaria (ATM) national CSO Networks Leaders’ Training on the Coordination and Management of CSOs’ Activities’ for ACOMIN, CiSHAN and TB Networks and Actionaid Nigeria under the Global Fund in 2012. I was the resource person for the ‘Training on Ward Health/Community Systems Strengthening (HSS/CSS) for 5 Batches of Chairmen and Secretaries of Ward Health Development Committees in Ezeagu, Udenu, Udi, Nsukka and Nkanu West LGAs in Enugu State during 2010-2011. I was also the Resource Person for Orientation and Capacity-building Workshop for Chairmen and Secretaries of Ward Health Development Committees in two LGAs in Ebonyi State, under GFR8 HSS/CSS project, 2010-2011. With respect to the provision of quality control and technical leads, I provided supportive supervision for about 600 (six hundred) PHCs in the 27 LGAs of Imo State was the valuator, Data Quality Self-assessment (DQS) of RI in Njaba LGA of Imo State on behalf of the NPHCDA during 2012-2014.

I have been providing quality control through oversight/site visits to Global Fund’s HSS/CSS, HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria projects in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Anambra and Kebbi States since 2012. I was the sole national consultant to Federal Ministry of Health and Unicef, Nigeria, for the Joint Annual Review [JAR] of National Strategic Health Sector Development Plan [SHDP] in Akwa Ibom State in 2012. I am a trained management trainer from Nigeria’s Centre for Management Development (CMD) in 2014, and Training of Trainers’ (TOT) from DFID/PATHS in 2006.

On awards, I received the 2014 Merit Award of Leadership and Role Model from Merit Time Organization; 2014 Gold Award West African Leadership Icons from Global Vision Communication (Publishers of African Voice); 2014 Distinguished Leadership Award from the Imo State Towns Development Association Lagos Women Wing; and 2014 Exemplary Leadership Award; Catholic Men Organization [CMO], St. Kizito Parish, Kuje, Abuja.

 

I received my Virtual Leadership Development Programme Diploma course from USAID in 2013.  In 2006, I participated in the Leadership Skills Development Training for the Revitalisation of Immunisation Services in Nigeria by NPI/FMOH; and the Annual General Meeting (AGM)/Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on Leadership in the Nigerian Health Sector: the challenges before the NMA. I also hold a doctoral degree in Optometry from the College of Medicines and Health Sciences of Imo (now Abia) State University in 1988. I have travelled to/through all the States in Nigeria. I am Fellow of the Academy for Capacity Building (FACB), member of the management committee of the Nigeria Association of Evaluators (NAE), Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM) and Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM).
